HD Install :: vmware tools install



I've installed DSL 1.5 (and subsequently RC2.0 - same result) under vmware gsx server OK, but can't get vmware tools to install - the install script wants to know where to find mknod, and I can't see it anywhere... What am i doing wrong?
I've been running off the ISO under VMWare Workstation v5.0, but with a couple of nigglies:
1.  If I install the VMWare tools, the icons on the desktop stop working.  You can click on them 'til doomsday but the apps don't launch.
2.  I cannot see the virtual hard drive to install onto it.  I hate to display my ignorance but I do not know how to do the equivalent of a Windows Device Manager to look at the device names.  Knowing the right device name would probably solve the issue.

Can't comment on (1) - though it would help if you said how you managed to install vmware tools but re (2) if you create a default VM you get a SCSI drive /dev/sda, which dsl doesn't see i think; you need to create a custom vm with an IDE drive, which dsl sees as /dev/hda

Thanks for your help.  I did try adding an IDE to the VM but cfdisk did not see any /dev/hda,b,c... Let me try that again.  My main question is, what do you use to see a list of what /dev/hd-whatever's DSL is seeing?  I plainly confess my ignorance in the details of running Linux and do not know how to do this.

As to adding the VMWare tools, I just used the VM | Install VMWare Tools... pulldown menu choice.  If there was an error message I never saw it in the several times I did this on different DSL VM installs.  I'm running VMWare Workstation 5.0, which may handle this differently from GSX Server.

Just a quick update -- adding an IDE drive worked fine.  I also was not executing SUDO SU in the BASH command window before running cfdisk so I may not have had authority to create the partitions.  

Anyway I'm now running off the virtual hard drive in VMWare Workstation 5.0.  For some reason most of the icons on the desktop came out about 1/16th their normal size.  I'm using Grub boot loader, don't know if that has anything to do with this phenomenon.
