HD Install :: oops on floppy boot

Hi I'm a linux newbie and this is my first time trying to install DSL on an older PC. Pentium 100 with 48MB ram and 1GB harddrive. The cd rom drive is an IMES ICD-1200AT VC8V, Firmware version A01.
When booting floopy for install without CD rom drive installed the boot process cannot find files, OK. However when I reconnect the cd rom drive I get an OOPS, as follows

Obviously this has something to do with the cd rom drive but what I do not know. Anybody know whats going on and is the situation salvageble.

Further to the above:
After booting into "failsafe" option I get this code

Does this mean that the CD ROM drive is not supported or I have a faulty CD Rom, it has no problems running under windows.

Try adding:

pnpbios=off

to your boot command line

Also may want to look in the BIOS and set PnP OS to no, or what ever it takes to imply that, if that option is there.

I have
ADDED "pnpbios=off" to the
DEFAULT linux24 APPEND line in the syslinux.cfg file on the floppy boot disk and
in the computer BIOS I have
disabled power management
set

but still get the same error message when I boot from floppy.
Any other ideas?
Incidently I have managed to boot with no problems using the boot img from "Trustix 2.1".
