Other Help Topics :: For downloading heavy files, live or HD install?

I have suse8.1 and windows2000 and I want to replace suse8.1 with 10.0. So I need to download soething like 5CDs. Now the only thing I have that can be online is DSL. Can I just download the files to the desktop or something and then burn them? Or must I install DSL to the hard drive? Like, where would it put the data I download otherwise? Anyway if I must install to the hard drive, will that destroy my suse and windows?
Please bare in mind that I do not know about computers and so cannot understand the special language you might otherwise reply with!

you can mount your hd and download to there. just put the path to it in firefox download(example: /mnt/hda(?)/(folder)). you should try ubuntu it's only 1 cd and way better and easier than suse.
Thanks for the advise Kerry
What makes Ubuntu better? Plus, is a big difference in which OS, what software I can get for them? I want one which has good choices of programmes I can put on it. Would suse and Ubuntu be the same in that respect?
Thanks
Justin

There both pretty close. ubuntu is debian based so you got access to thousands of packages. and using synaptic to look at and install the packages is a no brainer. plus since it's only 1 cd i thought you might want to give it a try. they have a live cd/installer so you can try it first.-> http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=03482#0

you can also have the cd sent to you for free i just got my 10 yesterday. i always keep 1 and pass the rest out to friends and family. i like the Xubuntu(xfce4) desktop eviroment.

Hi Woodlandjustin!

I have used SuSE 10.1 for a while and it works very fine on my 5+ years old laptop. Everything works from scratch. So I would give my vote for SuSE.

Have fun,
