There are 3 Variants as of now (GNOME based (UBUNTU), KDE based (KUBUNTU) and XFCE based (XUBUNTU)).
If you have an active internet connection you can download packages/updates at all times and that would be great.
More over I was having DSL and Ubuntu as multiple OSes. They worked well better than DSL-SUSE combination. You can get openSuSE for free.
Also, theres even more other variants of ubuntu...

Variants you mean edubuntu or any other?Free CD's are different. Free, from what I meant, was for accessibility, in which downloading and installing copies are free.
In your context, when you say that openSuSE is not 100% free, then you are also saying DSL among others are not - which is misleading imo. Each one have their own opinion. In my perspection you need to see the size. DSL is just 50 MB where as Open SUSE comes around 5 CDs.
Downloading and installing is pain with large size.
Since DSL is light its extremely smooth in this case.
For dial-up users like myself and all cannot download such big distros.
Possibly DSL like distros are most welcomed by us for downloading as well as internet access.Next Page...
