HD Install :: LILO Problem

Ok, here is what I am attempting to do. I have a 486 laptop with no workable external drives whatsoever. In order to install anything on the hard drive I need to connect the laptop hard drive to a regular pc using a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter.

When I install DSL to the hard drive it boots fine from the pc, but when I insert it into the laptop I get LI 40 40 40 40 40 ....

I had run into this while installing Slackware on the same laptop and learned that the way to fix this was to create a small /boot mount point at the beginning of the drive and then partition the rest to my heart's content. This worked fine for the slackware install and I still use it to this day.

Is there a way that I can install DSL so that it works? cfdisk doesn't give any options to create mount points. Has anyone else had these kind of issues?

Like Slackware, you can manually create a small boot partition that is located below the 1024 cylinder limit.

Just boot DSL from CD/floppy and then go into a root xterminal and you should be able to fdisk / cfdisk and lilo yourself on your hard drive to your heart's content.
