HD Install :: Do I have to save settings on a hd-install?

Hi,

i've installed DSL on a Laptop. It work's fine. So far, so good.
My question is: why do i have to save settings with the backup/restore process? I have all files on HD, so isn't it possible not to backup files and where can I adjust that?
If i delete the backup-file. It is created new till every reboot.
So what do i have to do?
