HD Install :: Newbie need help with swap partition!
Hi, I am a newbie with linux. I am trying to do a HD install in my laptop. I read a few post and they suggest me to do a swap paritition. So let me get this straight. I have windoz 95 running right now. According to the posts, I should partition my harddrive with fdisk and then boot up the CD and do the install. So I should partition it into 3 partitions? One for the linux install, one for the swap, and one for windoz 95
I only have a 1.2 gig HD. How much space should I allocate to each partition? Also, i don't enter the hd install command in the boot prompt right? I must completely boot up the linux from the cd then go into xshell?? Thanks for anyone that's going to help me in advance.
Also, if i have 2 OS in my laptop which one will it boot up first? and how do I select the alternative OS @ boot? Thanks.
Without knowing how many programs you need to install in Windows 95, a shot-in-the-dark suggestion would be:
500M partition = Windows 95
600M partition = Damn Small Linux
100M partition = swap
Damn Small Linux uses much less disk space. I don't remember the exact number of uncompressed size in MB, but it's less than 250 Meg.
This leaves plenty of room for expansion, if desired.
I don't use LILO for booting, so somebody else will need to give you help with that.
Good Luck.
