Upgrade the ram and see if that helps.

have you got a swap partition? that should help you a LOT when you have low ram resorces (like in your case). I seem to remember you can activate it both through an option at boot (don't remember which one, check in www.knoppix.net boot-options list or in this forum) and through typing swapon when logged as root.
when you have xwindows and menu working and everything is Ok, *ONLY THEN* I would install.Also if I were you, just for being sure, first I would save all settings in order to be sure you can retrieve them with the knoppix restore option at boot in case installation doesn't work properly.
If you have a swap partition probably you will not need to add more ram if you are willing to accept that applications take some time to load when you launch them..
