HD Install :: sound problem
I've got this really old laptop with damn small linux on it and, im not getting any sound. The laptop is a compaq armada 1560D and the sound card appears to be an ESS 1878 which should be sound blaster compatible. When i run sndconfig and select sound blaster, i can hear the sample file that plays but, no other programs seem to be able to produce sound and they all have various errors such as:
Couldn't open audio
Please check that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard
I get that error with xmms.
I have seen various sites where people have got it to work but, i have had difficulty following the instructions on them - the instructions go well over my head.
This isnt the exact same model...but it might point you in the right direction!

What sound files are you trying to play?
Sounds like the soundcard is configured, its just the sound files you want to play dont have codex or arent supported by xmms or whatnot!

ESS audio configuration is thoroughly discussed here - http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4615
With XMMS, I think you may need to check Audio I/O Plugins in Preferences.
A good way to test audio is to play an mp3 file from the commandline with mpg321.
ok, its working now
the instructions at http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4615 worked
thanks
