HD Install :: kernel rebuild? adding novell ncpfs support?

so.. i want to mount some novell volumes and i have a hard disk install. i apt-get'ed ncpfs and now..

root@box:/home/dsl# ncpmount -S charger -A charger -V Vol3 -U oneslice /mnt/ncp/
Logging into charger as oneslice
Password:
ncpmount: No such device in mount(2)
root@box:/home/dsl#

seems to indicate i may need this built into the kernel. any ideas? im at a loss.
