HD Install :: poorman's install problem
i am working on an old ibm 760e, and nothing i have tried will make the cdrom boot. so i decided to try the poorman's install using the tomsrtbt disk i made using dos under windows 95. the directions i am using to install are here poorman's install. i get all the way to the wget. when i do the wget and or the ping it tells me the host name look up fails. i had to set the eth card up, but because the ping didn't work, i can't tell whether the card is getting a wifi signal. the mac addresses for my network are where they need to be and ifconfig sees eth0 as the pcmcia card that i am using, a xircom card.
if i can get past this i shouldn't have a problem finishing the install. can any one help?
host name lookup failure usually means no nameserver.
Check what is in /etc/resolv.conf and can you ping your nameserver?
Also, did you try the syslinux version of the cdrom. It will usually boot on older computers when the standard one, which uses isolinux, did not.
got the name server added, pinged the name server and got 56 bytes recieved, then it hung and didn't do anything. restarted, tried it again without pinging the server, and i got the same error. any ideas?
can you point me to a good tutorial for syslinux? thanks
