HD Install :: cannot find update-alternatives

Hi folks,

I'm trying to install the gcc package in order to compile an app on DSL which is installed on a hard drive.  During the install process, gcc.postinst tries to run "update-alternatives", which does not exist.

I'm new to debian . . . is this part of it's package management process?  What is "update-alternatives" and where do I get it?!

Thank you!

Al
