HD Install :: Installing on 2nd hdd

Hello im new to linux,etc..

my pc has winxp home on it and i installed DSL on the 2nd hdd i installed JUST for linux so i not have any linux files on my 12t hdd which is for WinXp

the install wne fine until it needed to reboot to finish installing

when it rebooted i couldnt do anything but go into winxp home or the xp recovery
i installed EVERYTHING that it asked
i tryed making a note in the boot file
but that didnt work
i heard that i need to install lilo on my 1st hdd's mbr
i fell thats kinda odd becasue i could install win98SE on 2nd hdd and edit the boot file so i have option to run 98SE (which worked fine)

please help me i like linux but i cant do a install on the 1st hdd becasue the pc isnt mine =/

so i guess noone can help me =(

There are three choices that come to mind

1.Google for a program called Bootpart (Freeware)
Add Linux to the XP boot menu the linux boot item by following the directions.

2.As an alternate, you may be able to change the boot device from C to D in the BIOS setup.

3. Physically swap the drives so that XP is the second drive. (this MAY cause problems with XP not being the first drive in the system)

I have a great suggestion. Do what I did on my laptop.

Basically, I did the "Poorman's" installation.

This thread here explains the process. Plus, it chronicles my experience getting it to work.

The real upshot to this method is that there is no need for you to lose your existing install of Windows XP. There's no need to do any messy repartitioning. You're litterally just booting from a floppy and launching the file system for DSL manually.

It may not be the perfect solution. But, if you're primarily using this as a learning tool, it's a damn good one!

As an amusing side note: DSL runs a LOT faster on my laptop than Win98.
