HD Install :: DSL and CF
First off, I would like to know, what CF cards and USB readers are best to install DSL to? What size should I get? (What is the price range?)
Next, I am a little confused on what a "Frugal Install" is.
How do you boot DSL from a USB drive?
(BTW: I use DSL version 7.2, I have AOL dial-up and it takes forever to download anything up to 50 MB.)
Most of our experience with compact flash is with an ide adaptor. Therefore the cf looks like a regular hard drive. Since cf has limited write cycles, it is not a good idea to do a hard drive install to cf. Frugal is based on the work of Terry Gray, University of Washington, article building a silent PC. You can google it to see more. Frugal is enhanced to support many boot options for DSL and building non-interactive start-up appliances. Frugal is part of the main DSL distribution.
If you are going to use USB, then you must treat the cf as if it were a pendrive, and use the frgual_usb package. Note that the frugal_usb requires DSL v0.8.x and does do a download of a small package and a special boot floppy image to create the image. John, had good sucess using a USB reader with cf. I have not personally tried it.
