HD Install :: Frugal Partitions

What are good/ideal frugal partitioning schemes for various jobs ?

Eg:- Laptop DSL install no thumb drive
Laptop DSL install thumb drive
Thumb drive install

I know I need a partition to hold DSL itself, and swap is always nice, but what else & what kind of sizes are optimal for DSL ?
