HD Install :: Cannot Boot as DSL

My DSL Linux box was working fine as File / Printer Server. However all of a sudden the thing does not boot as user dsl.
when it tries to go to X windows it hangs. Also I had the problem of shutting down from X windows I had to exit it and then give a halt / shutdown command or it would hang up.
Now my Print Server also does not work
can anyone help ?
