HD Install :: Frugal install, just Read Only?

I have tryed the hard-disk-install but it use 230 - 240 mb? And thats not enough free space (i have 250) for me to install apt-get or ndiswrapper.

I haven't done hd install, but it sounds like 230-240 is about twice the amount of space you should require for the completed installation.  The KNOPPIX file, which contains the entire filesystem, is just a little over 120mb uncompressed.  My guess is maybe you have temp files left over from the installation?

Or maybe the hd install actually does use that much space?  I haven't quite figured out what the dsl-hdinstall script is doing.

A very recent version of ndiswrapper is included with DSL.

You can also boot dsl v3.x with unionfs to get a completely writeable system.

Just my 2 cents..
With small resources I would stay with dsl extensions and try uci and unc type. Going with apt-get or .dsl extensions will likely overrun your resources.

frugal takes getting use to but it sounds like what you need if you have very little space. the extensions can be loaded at start up by putting them in a myDSL folder and it will auto load at start.
example: you want apt-get, so create a folder name it " myDSL " then download the dpkg.dsl and put it in that folder and it will load at start. i'm not sure about ndiswrapper is that a dsl? perhaps that can be saved using the backup/restore.

I've been trying to figure this out.  Do you make the "myDSL" directory in the same partition that you install the iso image in?

In general, if one creates a directory in the same partition that the DSL iso is stored into, does DSL automatically find it and use it instead of the same named directory in the iso?

newby, you should think of where the _mounted_ paths are,

so [root_of_mountpoint]/myDSL will be looked at,
where [root_of_mountpoint] is the same as where the booted DSL image is located.

As always, you could specify the mydsl= bootcode

Also, in a standard frugal installation, you don't boot from an iso.. but the idea's the same.

you can put it anywhere as long as it's not in a sub folder. i usally put it where the knoppix, boot, lost&found folders are on the hd. i also have one on my usb key that loads if plugged in->

/media/usbdisk/icons
/media/usbdisk/kerry's
/media/usbdisk/mom's
/media/usbdisk/myDSL
/media/usbdisk/plugins
/media/usbdisk/3D.jpg
/media/usbdisk/endlessblue.jpg
/media/usbdisk/Fizzure3
/media/usbdisk/fluXBOX.png
/media/usbdisk/tuxwin.jpg
/media/usbdisk/xbox

here's what i keep on my DSL usb key that i use to load mine or mom's settings. there's also a copy of.torsmo,.xinitrc,.wmdrawerrc that i save so i don't have to make the changes manually everytime, i just copy them over.
