HD Install :: DSL crashes after a month

I suffer a problem of DSL crashing after about 40-50 bootings when installed on hard drive. This problem persisted till version 2.2 of DSL. So far i dint face any problem in 2.4
The message displays as some error in .XAuthority file and its not going to GUI. It remains in CLI only.

Hence i cannot work with it. How this could be resolved.!!

If you type

xsetup.sh

you can reconfigure your Xwindows settings.

To start graphical mode, type:

startx

I have had this happen after a power failure or forced shut down.

It might be that it has some problems checking your file systems, file system check needs to be done after x mounts, so after you have booted and you are in shell type fsck /dev/hdax (x means your / partition, usually /dev/hda1), if it gives error that your partition is mounted then i recommend to boot with dsl cd and do that check from live cd.

Here's how I handle this issue:

If my battery dies and it shuts down I have to use Knoppix STD and mount and unmount HDA1 through the console. That hasn't failed me yet.
