HD Install :: forgoten u-name and passwd after HDinsta

hi all !
I have installed DSL on a very old machine - P1 laptop with no CDROM or USB.
After installing I have managed to work on the machine a few times. But I have taken a week long vacation and now I am back and can't remember my login. To my best knowledge I didn't change the defaults and they stayd - DSL and DSL for u-name and passwd.
I can use "sudo su" when the bootup breaks so I can see files on HD.
How can I recover the user name ?
I am being promped to enter "box login:" should it be DSL or dsl ? what are the defaults of installation.
thank's for helping :(

If you can look at files with sudo su can't you type passwd to reset?

unfortunatly not...
Doubt it would work, you could try putting in the live disc to boot up with then mounting the HDD and just like copy what you want (programs, saves, prefs), just don't copy the file with the password if you manage to do that. But I like I said it probly won't work. I would try this for you but the computer I have DSL installed is at school and I'll have to wit to monday. If by some far chance this works please tell.
I just did a new frugal install and it didn't ask me for a login at all but I wish it would have.  I was doing a command in aterm and it said I needed root privileges.  Of course I don't know the root password because I never gave it one during the installation.  I typed sudo su passwd and it let me assign a new password for root.  Now once you have changed the password for root you can login as root and change it for any other user id.
