HD Install :: Frugal vs Normal Install?
Hello!
I'm newbie with DSL! :$
But i'm using a week ago and i think that is GREAT!
It detects and setups my WLAN PCMCIA card with no poblems...
Ok, i have a huge doubt. What is a Frugal install? differences with normal hd Install?
Thks a lot!
Normall install is what you are most used to. But even normal install has several options, standard and enhanced. single and mult-user.
Frugal, is like running the cdrom image on a device, hard drive or CF. Some people were copying the KNOPPIX folder and then using a boot floppy to find KNOPPIX to boot up the compressed image.
Frugal, which is based on Terry Gary "Silent PC" script, is customized for DSL. It only requires 54MB to run DSL compressed with all sorts of startup options, it uses lilo to boot, so no boot floppy needed. It was really made for older computers and CF which might be drive space challenged.
Oh Great!
Thks for the info.
So, i need a normal Install.
With a normal Install, i have a Linux-like normal installs runing. right?
So i can change things and settings and when i reboot the changes stays?
How do i install some app that comes on a .deb file using apt-get?
I can do it with dpkg -i but then i have to mess with the dependencies...
Thks againa for your time and respones.
PD: With more time i know DSL, it likes me much more.
If you search the forums theres threads on using apt-get to search for and install programs from the debian archives. ALso, another popular method is the 'Synaptic' program, this is a GUI front end, make package searches even and I believe a bit easier on determining dependicies.
Hope this helps!
P.S.: Don't worry about being a noob (I'm one as well), we all started somewhere
thks a lot...
i'll go to check and try...
