Apps :: .dsl problems

Sure,  I have 3 different computers I am trying this on.  All with DSL 1.0.
1. (pentium I  199mhz and 96mb ram) :D
2. (pentium III 999mhz and 256mb)
3. (amd duron @ 999mhz and 512mb)

I have not md5summed them,  that's what I'll try now.

Anyone have any ideas about Abiword??  All I get is question marks when I try to open a .doc . and before that happens it asks me for a password?? I know it must be something I'm doing,  I just can't figure it out.

dmizzel,
If you got those extensions under DSL 1.0,
Abiword is probably not getting what it needs from the other extensions.
Have a look at Roberts's thread.
It may be prudent to get DSL 1.0.1 and maybe do the extensions again.
I am on dial-up, but I would cut my losses and re-download.
Actually, I did.
 :)

adraker,
Thanx for your help. I have dialup as well so it will have to wait until tonight while I sleep :)

I did an md5sum of my gnu-utils.dsl  and gtks.dsl and they came back bad (they should have an emoticon of my looking like a jack-ass) :)  I will now check everything I get before posting problems about it.

I still can't figure out abiword (yes I did an md5sum check and it came back OK),  I now have DSL1.0.1. I have downloaded openoffice.uci which is working good so far.

I'm getting the following message from abiword when it opens my .doc file as all question marks:

(abiword:1129): gdk - Warning **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING : Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported.

That's an old issue.. hmm..
and I thought that was fixed in the latest version of gnu-utils.dsl ..
Are you using the newest?

First things first..
1. Put a fresh copy of dpkg.dsl and gnu-utils.dsl in the root of
the partition that has your /KNOPPIX directory in it..  nothing more..
..reboot..

2. Now, manually try to install the abiword.dsl
( which is an old version, and probably NOT compatible with the latest gtk2 )
by typing in a shell " mydsl-load /path/to/abiword "

3. Does abiword work OK now ?
..close abiword..

4. Add the gtk2.dsl to your same area you have the dsl-dpkg and gun-utils,
and for a fully automatic install, place the line " start_gtk2 " in your /opt/bootlocal file.
..backup and reboot..

5. Grab the abiword-gtk2-2.0.10.dsl file from the repository.
Install via the mydsl-load command , try to run it.  Is It OK ??

6. When grabbing other extensions from the repository ( gtkpod ) ,
check in the gtk2 section of the repository first.. for a gtk2 version.

I haven't personally checked every combination of gtk2 and gtk1.2 apps,
but my guess is that there may well be some instances where they
don't get along ( i.e , the older abiword ) ..

I did find that the copy of gtkpod that was in the multimedia section
was a gtk2 version WITH the full gtk2 in it.  I have removed it to
prevent confusion..  It was the same version as the one in the gtk2 area.
Thanks for the tip.
