is it possible to install a 2.6.x kernel for dsl? if so..
can someone point me to relevant tutorials in doing this?

Run a search here and you will find other posts relating to the 2.6 kernel. If you really want to rol your own then google for compiling kernels. Pay close attention to the editing the grub/lilo startup files.
