Other Help Topics :: what do I get exactly with a DSL HD install?

Hi everybody,

I never tried a HD install of DSL.  I know it says that it installs Debian, but I still wonder, what version of Debian does it install (stable, unstable, testing)?   What kind of repositories does it use - the actually Debian ones or DSL specific ones?  Last time I checked, the complete Debian repositories offered 18000+ packages - can DSL use them all?

Also - is there something I should read and be aware of before making a HD install or all I need to do is a regular DSL HD install, followed by an 'apt-get update', 'apt-get install synaptic' and then whatever else I want.  Is it really that simple?

Thanks,

No

You need to "Enable APT" from the menu after doing your HD installation.  Or choose "Synaptic" from the menu.

But do not attempt an

apt-get dist upgrade

or your install will be broken because DSL is not pure Debian and especially the XServer/XWindows will be broken by a dist upgrade.

If you really want to install Debian, I suggest either getting a Debian network install CD or choose "Debian Install" from the KNOPPIX livecd.

Thanks a lot for this important info!
