User Feedback :: 0.7.3 troubles



I thought it would be a good idea to pool my experiences of DSL 0.7.3 here thus far. I thank all those who have answered my questions elsewhere on the forum.

Version 0.7.3 as a live CD is fine, I managed to make a webserver. The 'xsetup' boot option allowed serial mice to be used straight from boot up.

My problems started with attempting a HDD install. Someone said that fixes for the 0.7.3 version are in the works, so hopefuly these annoyances will be gone soon.

The xsetup.sh and netcardconfig scripts dont seem to remember theyre status after a reboot. For the serial mice I did try to edit the files as described elsewhere on the forum, no luck there. Also, netcardconfig needed to be run after each reboot, despite it showing the correct settings. It seems the eth0 interface was not being brought up as active form previous settings...

Also, some of the .dsl files did not seem to behave correctly as they have done before:

Samba.dsl, this now shows the LinNeighbourhood icon on the desktop, not listed in the MyDsl menu, and the LinNeighbourhood progam is not listed as a program at the command prompt. Otherwise all the other samba programs are there (eg smbtree).

Mplayer.dsl, the icon on the desktop doesnt seem to do anything, but Mplayer can be called up from the MyDSL menu.

I know that some .dsl packages can corrupt the install of others. But I have had the above combination running under 0.7.1 along with the Gimp. 0.7.1 test screenshot

Needless to say I'm not giving up on DSL, not by any means. I'm just going to give 0.7.2 a try, if not then 0.7.1 which has worked fine for me before, until 0.7.3 improves. :cool:
From what I know of the changes to DSL over the past 2 minor version upgrades,
the icons and menus should not even be an issue..

I have spent considerable time upgrading the 80 + user contribs posted so far
in the repository so that they will be ready for the upcoming DSL 0.8 version,
which is testing out nicely at the moment.  

If there is an issue with a particular extension, it's certainly possible I've made
a typo in a file, or left a owner/permission out of whack when rebuilding one.
I've been receiving new ones every day, and sometimes I get behind in
making improvements or rebuilding older titles.

To follow up on your post, I've installed a fresh 0.7.3 to a HD, with a serial
mouse, 233 cpu, pcmcia net card, and 96 megs ram for this test.

The fix for this computers serial mouse seems to be successful by
adding these lines to your bootlocal.sh file.
"rm /dev/mouse"  <-- which removes the link to /dev/psaux
"ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/mouse"  <-- which makes the com1 port active

This fix sticks, reboot after reboot, with no xsetup.sh required.
This issue may have been caused by the new autodetection feature.
Since this is in beta, some corrections are expected.
The idea is to have it behaving nicely by 0.8 release time.

Your feedback is welcome, as we test HDInstalls the least of all.
DSL's strength is in making the best 50 MB Bootable Live CD.

As for the .dsl's, I could only test 2 of the three programs you listed.
Gimp and Samba.  Samba has been revised several times by roberts, the
contributor of samba, to make it easier to use for folks not familiar with the
"linux" way of setting up shares.

My install, which I did from the myDSLgui desktop installer, shows both
icon and menu items available and working.  Same with Gimp..
MPlayer runs fine on my big box, but for this little laptop, no-go..
I didn't see MPlayer in your screenshot either.... Only Gimp & Samba..
Again, on my big box, MPlayer shows both icons and menu options, and
they both work... ( MPlayer may not like the XFBdev server on this laptop )

So far, I'm good-to-go with this quick&dirty HDInstall...
Are there any other issues you are having?
Please let me know if 0.7.1 or 0.7.2 change the behavior of the extensions
DSL 0.7.1 still used "damnsmall" , and 0.7.2 used the simlink to "dsl"
Same goes for 0.7.3, as it is still symlinked.

There could still be some"damnsmall" left in some of the extensions...

libretto, I have now seen what your describing...
Change the lines in your bootlocal.sh like this..

rm -rf /dev/mouse
ln -sf /dev/ttyS0 /dev/mouse

See if those work for you...

I'm seeing some instances where the autodetect is picking up on my
OTHER pointing device...  
I tried this on another computer that has a ps2 pointer.
Warm booted fine, but after a cold boot, no serial mouse..
Must drop the com port on cold boot, and only see the pointer during
the knoppix autodetection..

Does your box have another mouse device on it ?
If it does, the autoconfig script writes a /dev/mouse which is wrong.
then the "rm /dev/mouse" command requires permission to delete.
"rm -rf /dev/mouse fixes this, and the
"ln -sf /dev/ttyS0 /dev/mouse" forces the link...
Probably overkill, but it works for me....

Now onto the extensions.....

ke4nt1, always a pleasure to receive your feedback and comments (long and thorough ones at that :;):) just to be clear, the test machine here is an EPIA M10000 with 256MB RAM and 20GB HDD. The box does not have a second mouse. I managed to find the PS/2 mouse, plugged it in and it works. Don't really want to go back to the serial mouse.

The mplayer did work in 0.7.1, its just didnt like having a screenshot taken with it running, thus its not shown in the screenshot. But the icon is thre hidden by the other windows. Still a little unsure why Linneighbourhood shows the icon but no actual apparent program under 0.7.3.

Anywho, if 0.7.2 uses the same 'dsl' symlink, then it will probably be the same as 0.7.3, if so will go back to 0.7.1. As a final comment, it would be helpful if the release is a beta version that it is labeled as such. I know DSL is continually been improved, but a little warning would be nice.

Will let you know how 0.7.2 goes when I can this week. :)

Works perfectly here. Boot up 0.7.3, used myDSL desktop icon to grab samba.dsl. Got both icon and menu item.

Click the LinNeighborhood icon and I immediately saw MSHOME network. Click the MSHOME network and immediately saw my Windows machines.

If you are installing many extensions to hard drive, and some are red. You could have conflicts. The warnings have been posted on the web page. Test first with liveCD.

There is nothing wrong with samba.dsl
