xfbdev should work if you were able to boot with a frame buffer (Little Penguin Icon in the upper left corner before text starts scrolling).
that has happened at some point so maybe i have a chance right when you get the boot prompt At 'boot:' type 'fb800x600' So it looks like this: 'boot: fb800x
